Everywhere on the planet children live in compromised and difficult circumstances. The projects of Maria's Children International use the arts as an initial connector with these children, which then opens them to their creativity and strengthens the knowledge of their unique self worth and abilities. It is our mission to create and support avenues for the forgotten children of the world to grow into healthy, happy, contributing adults in their own societies.

Patch and Jan Clowns

HISTORY

Jan Thatcher Adams M.D. traveled with Dr. Patch Adams (no relation) to Russia in November 1995. She clowned in orphanages, hospitals, and nursing homes with the Patch Peace Clowns, and has returned many times with Patch in later years.

Through this connection, she met Maria Yeliseyeva and her Maria's Children project in Moscow. With almost no funds and in a tiny basement studio, Maria was enriching the lives of 12 orphans, all labeled mentally deficient.

Gradually, Dr. Jan developed steady funding in America for Maria's Children Moscow, and Maria Yeliseyeva saw her project grow from 12 kids to nearly 400 orphan, refugee, and disabled children.

With the help of many dedicated donors, volunteers, and her deeply committed husband, Dmitri Gerasimenko, Dr. Jan created a non-profit (501c3) foundation in the U.S., Maria's Children International, in 1999. New projects, using the proven model created by Maria Yeliseyeva, are growing and shining light into tiny, desperate lives in St. Petersburg, Russia, Los Cahobas, Haiti, and Dmitrov, Russia..

Maria's Children International is a fund-raising organization. We are all volunteers, and have no paid employees. We supply the basic operating funds for our projects through donations and through the sales of the wonderful images created in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We also secure donations of supplies (clothing, toys, medicine, and art materials), and deliver thousands of pounds each year to our projects. Our offices/storerooms/gallery in Savage, Minnesota house the only known Russian Orphan Art Gallery in North America.
